Change is the only constant, and life is full of it. Everyday something is different, be it something small or something revolutionary. Your life is never the same for two days in a row; in fact it sometimes feels like it’s changing with every moment. There are the positive ones, there are the negative ones, and there are the seemingly neutral ones.
Handling changes in your personal life can be a very difficult process. One of the biggest hurdles in leading a comfortable like is conditioning yourself to get used to the constant change. Some people seem to be built for this. They get bored when things stay the same for long and are constantly looking for new and exciting things. They are prone to taking risks, some of which turn out well while others don’t. On the other hand there are people who find comfort in familiarity. They like routine and the things that come with it.
No matter which kind of person you are, you will often be faced with change in your personal life. When these changes are drastic, large or influential in nature, it affects everything in your life. If you lose a loved one, get married, move to another town, or have a baby, the rest of your life is automatically affected. Handling these personal life changes efficiently is not always an easy process. How do you manage your life so that the changes in your personal life, positive or negative, are taken in your stride? How do you turn into that person who takes everything gracefully?
Compartmentalization of your life is the first step. Although it may seem like a really simple thing to do, many of us don’t divide the things into our lives into categories. Know who your friends are, know what they would do for you, know what your job is, what you need to do at work, etc. The actual knowledge of these small things helps you categories things and develop priorities. This way, when there are changes in your personal life it is easier to realise what kind of change it is.
The second step to understand how this change will affect other parts of your life. Don’t let every little change in your personal life affect your career. Between a date with your new girlfriend and an extended meeting, decide your priorities and determine how one is going to affect the others. You are the only person who can decide how events in your personal life are going to affect you, and how they’re going to affect your career.
The basic mistake that we all make is that we refuse to take decisions. Sometimes deciding something and sticking with it no matter how tough, is all it takes you uncomplicated your life. When things change in your personal life, use these steps to come to a decision about what action you need to take next and stick with that choice. It will help you stay focused and create a better, clearer perspective for you. More importantly, being able to make a choice and stick with it will boost your self esteem.

Tsunami Threats
In the recent past the use of the word ‘tsunami’ has become common practice. In 2004 there was a tsunami in the Indian Ocean which was caused by an earthquake measuring 9.2 – making it the third largest earthquake ever recorded. What followed was complete pandemonium and chaos. People were not familiar with the concept of a Tsunami and despite the lag of several hours between the earthquake and the tsunami, they were caught unaware. There were no Tsunami warning systems in the Indian Ocean and thus several lives were lost in the Tsunami of 2004.
More recently in 2011, Japan saw a similar situation. Although Japan was relatively well prepared for a tsunami, with tsunami walls in place, they had not anticipated the size of the waves. Entire towns were destroyed and lives were lost as the world realized the minimal (if any) control that they have over mother nature.
With the increased awareness of Tsunamis and the threat we face from them, it is important for us to educate ourselves and our children on this phenomenon. Of late, Tsunamis have received special attention in Geography classes around the world so as to increase the awareness of children. As adults, we need to know the signs of a Tsunami and ways in which we can protect ourselves and our loved ones.
The first thing we need to do is to dispel all misconceptions. Although earthquakes have been the causes for Tsunamis recently, not every earthquake causes a Tsunami. A tsunami can also be caused by landslides, glacier calving volcanic eruptions etc.
Recognize the warning signs. Tsunami prone areas are knows. Look them up and find out if your home is within these bounds. It is common for the sea to recede before a Tsunami. This is called a drawback. Sometime people see the recede so far back and are intrigued. They go closer to inspect parts of the seabed they may not have seen before, thus increasing the danger in which they put themselves. The force of the Tsunami is not only felt with the oncoming of a large wave, but also as it sucks back everything in its path as it recedes.
Attempts should be made to move away from coastlines. Moving inland can take time, and if you don’t have much time, try moving towards higher ground. This may not be ideal, but it is a better option than being stranded at ground level during a tsunami. If you live in a tsunami prone area, assemble a pack of food, first aid and basic necessities and keep it in an area where it can be accessed with ease.
Just like in case of all emergencies – save lives, not possessions. Do what you can to save yourself and other people, abandon all belongings. If you’re trapped in the water, try and get hold of something that floats.
Remember, the damage caused by tsunamis last much longer than the actual waves. The reconstruction of cities and lives take time. Tsunamis are scary and uncontrollable in nature. All you can do it be aware, and be prepared.

Colours of Life – from Childhood to Old age
From childhood to old age, life is a rainbow with each colour representing a different shade of life. As Shakespeare put it in Seven Ages of Man All the World’s a Stage and as we go through our lives we play the same character in different colours.
Childhood is filled with moments which are looked back upon as fond memories. The years of fun, laughter, innocence and mischief are the ones that remain in our minds as eternal bliss. Whether we spent them running around playing games, engrossed in books, surrounded by friends or pulling pigtails on the playground we all have stories about the early years of our lives that we tell with such joy. We hold these years of life closest to our hearts, cherishing the joys of our ignorance.
But as we all know, childhood doesn’t last forever and before we know it we’re teenagers, understanding ourselves and the world around us. Those teenage years are truly turbulent. Remember your first kiss? Your first date? There’s a maddening excitement to those years that flows through every teenager’s blood. It makes us want to sing, shout, dance when no one’s looking and laugh at the silliest things. It is in these years that we discover who we really are and find the people and things that we value the most.
Once college is done, life takes us to the ‘real’ world. Suddenly, our jobs become an important aspect. We begin to understand finances, work culture and worldly matters. Many choose to travel when they can, and spend time exploring areas previously unknown to them. This fantastic phase of life is filled with the yearning for more. Ambition takes us from one place to another until we finally settle into the comfort of married life.
With married life comes a new beginning – a new life with a spouse and maybe even the pitter-patter of little feet in the house. Life is now lived as a collective and the wellbeing of other has to be thought of before that of our own. Living with and for a family is a joy in itself. In our children we see ourselves. We look out for them as much as we can and soon learn that we have to let them make some mistakes for themselves.
Old age is often considered to be a second childhood. Time after retirement is spent relaxing, enjoying all we earned throughout our lives. With family there to help out whenever needed, now’s the time to do all those things you told yourself you would but never got around to doing. With a perspective that is framed by knowledge, the world is a different place; much calmer and clearer than ever before. Wisdom is at its peak, and sometimes shared with the young ones around us.
These colours of life make this journey a beautiful one. Shared with friends and family, we always look back affectionately on the years gone by and ambitiously on the ones coming. However, the moments that you’re living right now are the ones that really count.
Striving For Excellence Not Perfection
Perfection and excellence are two concepts which are often mistaken for one another. Although they seem to be closely related, the two are very far from each other. Understanding the difference between the two will help you to better your goals and redefine your self expectations.
Aiming for perfection is a near impossible goal. As fantastic as it may sound, perfection is stagnant. It is complete, finished, with no place to go. It is an idealistic approach. The struggle for perfection has certain implications on the way we think. It makes us set up goals for ourselves that we already consider difficult. We tend to become obsessive and controlling, not necessarily in a good way. Constant focus on trivial details for no apparent reason can leave you feeling drained and discouraged.
Excellence on the other hand is quite different from the concept of perfection. Excellence evolves with time. It changes and grows. It requires you to constantly strive to do the best that you possibly can by making sure that the end goal that is not difficult or unachievable. In fact, it is perfectly within your grasp. Think about it. Which would you prefer – to constantly struggle or to do what you do to the best of your ability and thereby achieve excellence?
Excellence allows you to be wrong. It gives you the ability to take risks accept the results for what they are. It is important to give yourself room to be wrong, and to make mistakes every now and then.
Are you doing everything you can to achieve excellence? Strive to work with the best of your capabilities. Make sure you know the jargon of the industry you are transcribing for. Don’t misspell words. If there is a word that you are not familiar with or are unsure of the spelling, make a note of it and double check it later. Concentrate on punctuation which may go by unnoticed in conversation but makes a substantial difference when written. You need to know that language that you are working with inside out, grammar and all. Most importantly, know what your client wants and cater to it. Many clients have specific requirements, don’t ignore them.
By taking note of these and other such small details in your work you can go from average to excellent. To steer clear of the perfection obsession, allow yourself room for errors. The biggest burden of this trap is guilt and self berating that comes after something doesn’t happen the way you planned it to. Excellence takes note of the fact that you don’t have control over everything and sometimes things simply don’t go your way. It allows you to reward yourself for accomplishing your goals. A goal is not something that comes once at the end of the journey. There are several smaller goals and route to success. Reward yourself on reaching a predefined goal.
Give your career some breathing room by choosing excellence over perfection. Nobody’s perfect, so why struggle to be nobody, right?

Styles for Good Resume Writing
There are different stages in career planning that need to be carefully handled. One careless move can upset your whole plan. Resume writing is the most important aspect of career planning. Today’s job market is pretty tough and competitive. A well prepared resume can make a positive impression on your would-be employer. A professional resume is a properly structured document, written in simple and meaningful words. Its objective is to give a summarized preview of a person’s experiences and qualifications. A quality resume helps a potential employer to decide, at first glance, whether the applicant deserves to be considered for a particular job.
Selection of the most appropriate style depends on your experience and the type of job applied for. Two most popular styles are Chronological and Functional resumes. Let’s discuss their salient features.
1. Chronological resume: It is most familiar and popular style. In chronological resume, work experience is listed in reverse chronological order, i.e. giving your latest job experience first. It contains short description about each job you held. You should start your resume, giving essential information about your candidature in the following sequence:
a) Your contact information, with your name, mailing address, telephone/cell phone number and e-mail address. Contact information should be correctly written, to enable the interviewer contact you when required.
b) Job objective: You should give a small description about how you consider yourself suitable for the post applied for.
c) Experience: Clear indication of different positions you held in your service career, in chronological order starting with your latest job details. Give name of employer, short description of the position held and the dates of joining and leaving the job.
d) Qualification: List different examinations passed and degrees obtained. Mention each qualification with name of college/university, year, degree/percentage of marks secured and special achievement, if any. Mention if you possess any additional skill to support your candidature for the post applied for.
e) References: Although it is not essentially required information, it can help making your resume more impressive.
2. Functional resume: This style of resume writing emphasizes on the skills and major accomplishments of the applicant. In a functional resume, you don’t list your work experience in chronological order. Here you focus highlighting your strength, your skills and major achievements. You mention about your specialization in a particular field like software development, sales, management or administration. This helps your potential employer to decide quickly if you are a suitable candidate he is looking for. You mention your job experience at the end of the resume, in a simple way, without much emphasis on each position you held.
Main objective of a functional resume is to invite attention of your employer to your major skills and areas of special accomplishments. This style is helpful to those who don’t have consistent job history or who frequently keep changing jobs. This may also be useful for persons with less or no job experience. Its main disadvantage is it lacks enough details about your work experience.
There are some more resume writing styles like targeted or combined resumes. You may try different styles and finally decide the one that suits you best.
