Basic Things You Need to Know About Puppy Liter Training

If you find the first steps of puppy liter training quite difficult, you could avoid stress by preparing yourself in advance by reading up on the best methods and collecting a few handy puppy potty training tips on the way.

Here are a few tips you may not have seen anywhere else:

Living Arrangements

Do you have your own house or are you renting an apartment? If you live in a spacious area, bring him outside whenever he needs to relieve himself. Part of the puppy liter training is reinforcing the idea that he needs to go outside when he needs to relieve himself.

If you live in a small apartment, put papers on the corner of your house and assign it as his designated “potty area”. Since your dog will be indoors most of the time, it’s a good idea to assign an area in the house which doesn’t have much traffic – like the corner of your kitchen or bathroom.

Rewards vs. Punishment

Should you reward a good behavior and punish the bad ones? Positive reinforcement in the form of a reward is a great way to potty train your pup. Praising him or giving him dog treats is one way to reinforce a good behavior.

However, punishing your dog by hitting him or even yelling at your dog is a big NO-NO. This will only confuse and frighten him and might result in regression in your puppy litter training.

Breeds

The learning curve of some dogs is faster than others. This is because a dog’s breed defines a few things about the way they learn. Some breeds pick up things faster than other breeds. If you could not devote a lot of time potty training your pup, choose a breed that is easily trainable like a Labrador Retriever, Poodle or Border Collie. Avoid breeds that are difficult to train like Shih Tzu or Chow Chow.

Potty Materials

Should you spend a lot on potty training your dog? Fortunately, you do not have to spend that much; you only need cleaning materials, puppy training pads to absorb urine and dog litter (if you don’t want to put papers on the floor). If you’re on a shoestring budget, you can use old towels or clothes – although those will be difficult to clean.

Crate Training

Your dog learns how to control his bladder for longer when you put him inside his crate because dogs do not like to soil the place where they live and sleep in. He’ll soon learn that as soon as he gets out of the crate he needs to go to the toilet.

Regular Feeding Times

Dogs learn faster when things are done on a routine basis. Feed your dog the same time everyday so that it will be much easier for you to time when he’s about to go to the potty.

There are no secrets to litter training your puppy; your dog will quickly learn where to relieve himself if you remain persistent, consistent and patient. If you’re armed with the right information, the potty training process would be easier and less stressful and for you and your dog.
