Don’t Buy Solar Panel Kits – Here’s a Better Way to Save
Author: Keyi Cansa
The latest things to hit the energy efficiency market are solar panel kits. Many are wondering if this is a good investment for their home. The truth is there is a much better way to get panels for your home and for far less than you might think. The typical kit that will give you a panel that produces 1 Kilowatt of power will cost about 0. You can build a panel for about 0. At that price, you’ll have three solar panels for what one kit could cost.

How to Build A Solar Panel from Scratch
If you are able to swing a hammer and use a saw, you can build a panel from scratch, rather than buy kits. The needed parts are as close as your hardware store. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A Good Manual or Guide: Before you purchase any materials, make sure you have a really good manual or guide. This is one area where you may want to spend a little more for one that is not just a four-page generic booklet. Get a video guide if possible. Most people learn more from a video than a book.
- Sheets of Glass, A Roll of Copper Wire, and Plywood: Your local home improvement store will probably have the best prices for these items.
- Solar Cells: The photovoltaic cells are not difficult to locate, either. Many of the major hardware stores can get these for you.
- A Weekend: The first solar panel you build may take a long weekend to complete; however, once you have that one done, the next should only take a day or so.

Lower Electric Bills
You obviously will not be able to go completely off the grid with one solar panel. However, with each solar panel you build, you’ll see a significant savings on your electric bill. You can connect the panels together in order to operate larger appliances or even your home’s lights. Tie enough panels together and you can have the power company paying you for electricity.

Not really sure what the current prices on photovoltaic panels are, but dang they are steep. Last time I checked, they were like 500 bucks for a 45 Watt panel.
Consider: A standard plug-in space heater uses 500-750 watts on low setting (depending on the model). You’d need a dozen panels to run it, and then only when you’re getting full sun! If you wanted to store any juice for when the sun goes down, add more panels, AND a bank of batteries for storage.
A small (500-1000 Watt) windmill is actually more cost-effective; the windmill itself running $500-1000. And, rather than use it for a heater, I’d recommend getting a 12VDC or 24VDC (or whatever is appropriate for the windmill you get) water heater element for your hot water heater, and use it to produce your domestic hot water! That is the second-biggest energy cost in the house, after heating!
But, back to heat: The best bang for your buck can be had from more insulation!

First you should start with your planning commission to find out if they allow solar panels, strange as it seems some do not.
next an on line search will give you contractors in your area.

This should get you started, you might also ask about available rebates, and an expandable system, if you decide to start with a system below your needs and increase it later.

Speaking seriously, a solar electric system that will eventually pay you back will not be cheap. It will generally cost as much as your electric bills for the next 5-20 years. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a good deal, just that there will be upfront cost.
Also, in some areas, solar electric will never pay back at today’s prices.
If you mean solar water heating, then that will be less expensive, but it’s still a few thousand initial outday.
p.s. Be cautious, there are a lot of scams out there that suggest you could power your entire house for $200 or less. If that were true, wouldn’t you see a lot of people actually doing it?

Where can I buy a low voltage solar panel?
For a project at school we have to devise a experiment using solar power. I’m going to connect a solar panel (aorund 3volts) to the motor of one of those cheap plastic hand-held fans. Does anyone know where I can buy a solar panel near Parramatta or Bondi?
