Choose A Niche Instead Of A Product For Better Affiliate Marketing Results

By valeri On August 20, 2010 Under Affiliate Marketing

There are two schools of thought when it comes to selecting products for affiliate marketing.

First, there is the teaching that dictates that you should select a product and build an entire marketing campaign around that product. While this can result in a focused affiliate marketing campaign and allow you to target product-based keywords, it is a shortsighted marketing method.

Instead of choosing just a product to develop your campaigns around, why not focus on a niche instead?

When you focus your marketing efforts on an entire niche instead of just one product, there are several different benefits.

Marketing to a niche means that you’re casting a wider net.

You can promote several products at several different price points. This makes it easier for you turn a profit from your list and your website.

For example, if you’re in the golf niche you can promote $500 golf clubs, a $90 golf video course and a $45 ebook on improving your golf game. Your niche members may not all be able to afford the $500 golf clubs, but they may be interested in the ebook.

Alternatively, you may have list members that don’t want purchase an ebook but are interested in a video course. If you were promoting just one of those products, you’d miss out on sales.

By choosing a niche instead of a product you can brand yourself as an expert in that niche.

You can become the go-to person for that topic and you’ll find that your popularity will grow. You can optimize your website and your blog for terms related to the niche.

When a new product comes out for the niche you’ll be uniquely positioned to offer an expert review of the product. Since you’ve taken the time to build up your reputation in the niche, you’ll have a better chance of making money with the new product than other people who are simply trying to promote the product.

Instead of starting from scratch with each new product you’ll be able to build momentum off of your previous marketing efforts and make more money.

Another benefit of marketing to a niche instead of for a specific product is the appearance of being more objective. You’ve probably seen websites that are so slanted to one product that they seem untrustworthy.

There’s nothing wrong with promoting a product, but if a website is too promotional it comes across as spammy. The average visitor will turn away. As an affiliate marketer you want to encourage trust and make a connection with your target market. This isn’t possible if your website looks slanted toward one product.

When you market several different products you’ll appear more objective to your target market. They’ll see you as an unbiased resource on many different products in the market. You’ll be able to use your content to market to the niche in general, instead of just a specific product. Your content will be easier to write and you’ll be more profitable to boot.
