Reliability is a very important quality to consider in choosing a web hosting provider.  Reliability refers to both the performance and uptime of a commercial website.  A website that fails to stay online or gives consistently slow performance could cost companies hundreds or thousands of dollars in losses.  Of course, everyone wants to choose an honest and high-caliber hosting service that offers 99.9% uptime and fast performance.  However that can be easier said than done sometimes.  How can you determine the reliability of a web hosting provider?

Start your project by doing some thorough research.  You may have to consult a web dictionary at times, but if your website will require a major application to work optimally then it’s worth learning more about.  Do not make a decision until you understand what the company is offering.  You may want to consult a web-savvy forum just to be sure you understand a word or idea, as many users are willing to give free information via message board.

You can also benefit yourself by reading a website’s terms and conditions, as this lengthy document will often clarify potential misunderstandings and highlight other service agreements that may not sit well with you.  It also pays to do extra research from independent websites besides the company’s own.  The more you research the better chance that you will come across some negative experiences in web hosting reviews.  For example, some reviews may state that a web host company offers very poor reliability.  Other reviews may be negative overall but still complement a web host provider’s reliability. 

Last but not least, try and contact the web hosting company directly.  The best way to inspect a company’s honesty and professionalism is to call them on the phone and find out important information on a one-to-one basis.  If you notice that the company doesn’t answer your question or gives a vague or confusing answer then this could very well be a sign of bad experiences to come.
