As a result, the meter will be made to spin backwards and this establishes a credit with the utility company in offsetting future usage. This method is known as Net Metering and is completely approved by State Level Electricity Policy.

You can make a very inefficient photovoltaic (solar electricity) cell out of a sheet of copper that is heated to make an oxide coating and left in an electrolyte.

If you want to make a silicon solar cell, it is cheaper to buy than make unless you were to go into business doing it.
If you look at http://www.surplusshed.com or http://www.allelectronics.com you can buy surplus or used solar cells and connect them together to make a panel that generates electricity. Once you generate it you may need a way to store the energy, usually in a battery, unless you just want to demonstrate power from the sun and don’t care about getting power when it is dark…
I have also seen solar trickle chargers on sale for less than $20 at http://www.harborfreight.com that are intended to be plugged into a car lighter to top off the battery constantly. These could possibly be modified to put in your window and run a motor or something, or possibly charge a small battery powered device….
As a disclaimer, be careful with any and all of these suggestions, use adult supervision when appropriate, etc….

There’s no way that “home built” system that will generate enough power to run your home “off the grid”. That’s all hogwash! No wind = no electricity generated. No sun = no electricity generated.
I’m looking into a grid tie solar system. I’m still working out the math for my home. They are expensive ($20k – $50k) before tax credits, but they have been designed by engineers, not back yard, shade tree wanna-be engineers. They will put power into the grid during the day (making your meter run backwards) and you’ll draw the power back at night (when there’s no sun). This is perfectly legal. It must be installed by power company approved techs. That’s how power companies are going to meet their “green energy” mandates for the future. You’ll generate power for the power company and get paid wholesale prices for it (during the day). But you’ll buy it back at retail (at night)

how to make your own solar panel?
i need to make a mini-solar car which shouldn’t cost much. it’s for my science project. for now, i just found out how to make a solar panel using copper oxide, but it does not generate enough power to power up the engine of the toy car [ the small engine they used in the toys, like from TAMIA]
