Potty Train – How To Instruct Your Own Pet Where To Go
In order to teach your dog where you would like her to do her business, you have to be there to direct the proceedings, an obvious, yet often neglected, fact of life. In order to be there to teach the dog where to go, you need to know when she needs to go.
Indeed, the success of house training depends on the owner’s ability to predict these times. Certainly, a regular feeding schedule will facilitate prediction somewhat, but there is nothing like loading the deck and influencing the timing of the outcome by yourself.
Whenever you are at home, make sure the dog is under constant supervision or confined her to a small area. If already well trained, simply instruct the dog to lie down in her bed or basket.
Alternatively, confine the dog to a crate or doggy den or tie down which is a short, 18 inch lead that can be clipped to an eye hook in the baseboard near her bed. Short term close confinement strongly inhibits urination and defecation, since the dog does not want to soil her sleeping area.
Thus, when you release the puppy dog each hour, she will definitely need to urinate immediately and defecate every third or fourth hour. Keep the dog confined to her doggy den and take her to her intended toilet area each hour, every hour and on the hour.
When taking your dog outside, instruct her to sit quietly before opening the door and she will soon learn to sit by the door when she needs to go out.
