All pet owners will have to train their puppy to potty shortly after arriving home. Puppy potty training should start with a kennel, this will help to speed up the process (dogs don’t like to soil their beds). Create a schedule and stick to it, dog’s are creatures of habit and will adjust very quickly, deal with accidents in a positive manner, don’t scold your puppy for having an accident.
Puppy potty training can be easy, once you have established a schedule. Create one that you and your puppy can live with and stick to it. Feed your puppy meals at the same time daily and give your puppy a bedtime and wake up time(keep to the same time every day).
When you take puppy out to potty, put a leash on puppy and take to the same spot every time. Take puppy to designated spot and wait till puppy potties. Once puppy has relieved itself, praise puppy for good behavior. Your puppy doesn’t know what is right unless you let them know by praise.
While puppy potty training accidents will happen. If you happen to find it, don’t hit or scold your puppy, this can cause puppy to fear you and soon puppy will begin to hide when they need to go and eventually it will become a habit to go inside the house (habits are harder to break). Instead, clean it up with a good cleaner and keep a closer eye on your puppy. If you happen to catch puppy in the act, say “no” and take puppy outside midstream and continue with puppy potty training.
Never give your puppy free rein of the house, this has to be earned. When you can’t keep a good eye on your puppy, keep in a crate or put a leash on puppy and carry around with you (your choice), just don’t let puppy out of your site. Learn the signs that your puppy needs to potty. If you catch them wandering off, take them outside immediately.
