Building A Solar Panel – How To – Measure Volts, Amps, Watts Of A Solar Panel
Author: Bret Parker
When building a solar panel or looking for a solar panel, you should always know the final wattage, volts, and amps that you want the solar panel to generate.
Solar electricity is generated from do it yourself solar power panels connected in series or parallel to form a home solar power system
Your solar panel should always use the same size and same type of solar cells to keep the power consistent.
Larger solar cells produce more amps, and smaller cells produce fewer amps and the watts are lower.
This is why it is important to make sure that you build solar panels that are similar in wattage, amps, and voltage output – and here is how you do it!
Step 1
Solar panels are measured in power – Watts, volts, and amps.
When determining the overall wattage of a solar panel we use this simple equation:
Watts equals Volts multiplied by Amps.
You can use this table to find volts, amperage, and wattage if you know any two of the three variables.
Solar cells create about.5 volts of DC electricity – regardless of physical size. The only thing that changes with the size of a solar cell is current. (AMPS).
Commercially available solar cell 3 inches by 6 inches output is more than likely rated at .5 volts with 3 amps of electricity.
Split a solar cell into two equal halves, each solar cell would be rate at .5 volts and 1.5 amps each. Volts stay the same, but amps changes with solar cell size.
CALULATIONS FOR SIZE
Determine how many solar cells to make a 60 watt solar panel.
We know that our 3 x 6 solar cells are .5 volts and have 3.3 amps. So we take 60 watts divided by 3.3 to get our overall solar panel voltage.
60watts divided by 3.3 amps equals 18 volts.
Solar panel voltage is 18 volts so we can find out just how many solar cells we need?
Solar Panel Voltage divided by single solar cell voltage equals the Number of cells needed per panel
so now we take 18 volts divided by .5 volts it equals 32 solar cells.
This means that we will need to wire these solar cells together in series to achieve the 18 volts.
SOLAR ARRAY
Commercial solar panel array systems consist of individual solar panels being connected in series to produce higher wattage.
For example, a 180 watt, 3.6 amp solar panel array system may consist of three 60 watt, 3.6 amp solar panels connected together in a series – 180 watts.
You achieve higher voltage by connecting solar panels in series.

First make sure they all work properly. If they are nearly identical, it’s your choice, so you could choose higher current or higher voltage. What would better match your load or your instrumentation? If the cells are mounted on a common substrate, the engineers may have already made the choice for you.

There are several videos online that will give you a general idea of how th make solar panels. There are more in-depth guides available that teach you the entire process, step-by-step.
The energy collected by the sopar panel is stored in one or more batteries (depending on the size and scope of your system) then flows through a converter that converts the DC power into AC power for use in your home.

That sounds like a good experiment. You would not strictly need a resistor, but in practice, people are generally more interested in the *power* out of a panel than the voltage, so it would be good to put at least a light load across the panel.
However, when taking your readings, you want to make sure that your solar panel is consistently pointed straight at the sun. If I laid the panel flat on the ground, I might conclude that the voltage goes down in the morning because it’s cold, but in fact, I would just be reading the low angle of the sun on the panel.

There are a few university labs that are capable of the kind of precision and cleanliness required. . Silicon doped at .001% is hopelessly contaminated. You would still have to form the oxide insulation layer, etch windows in it for contacts and vacuum-deposit ultrapure metal for electrical conduction. About the best you could manage in a home lab would be a simple diode.

Where can I buy solar cells online? Not a solar panel but the cells individually.?
Im in this solar car project and thats why im interested in buying solar cells. Im looking to boy solar cells and then arrange then according to my needs. So bassically im looking for a site that sells solar cells and then I can take them and put them together however I need.
Paul that is wrong. You game a book link.

How do you connect 4 small solar panel cells?
I have to do a project for my physics class, and we have to connect 4 solar panel cells and then find the best angle/direction that it absorbs the most light.
Does anyone know how to connect the cells in series and in parallel??

Could you melt silicon and dope it yourself with boron / phosphorous for making solar cells for a solar panel?
I was wondering, assuming that you could attain these resources, if you could essentially form your own sheets of the 2 different types of silicon.

Can I measure output of a solar panel by putting multimeter leads directly to the cells?
I have put about five solar cells together in series and would like to see if the temperature outside affects electricity generated by a solar cell for a project.
Can I connect the multimeter leads directly to the last cell, – to – and + to +?
I was told a resistor is necessary, is this true?
Thanks
