US man severed own arm with guillotine

US police say a homeless man who walked into a medical clinic with his right arm severed said he accidentally cut his own limb off with a homemade guillotine.

Officers checked a wooded area near the urology clinic and found the severed arm and guillotine at a makeshift camp where he was living.

Police said the guillotine unexpectedly dropped on the mans arm at his camp in Bellingham, Washington state.

The victim and his arm were rushed first to St Joseph Hospital in Bellingham.

Police spokesman Mark Young said the man was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle in hopes the limb could be reattached.

Young tells The Bellingham Herald the arm was severed above the elbow.

The victim was not identified.

Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg-Hanson said the man is in serious condition in the intensive care unit. She could not say whether his arm had been reattached.

Officers said the guillotine was constructed by tall timbers the man found by scavenging the local area.
