World cup 2010 The USA vs Slovakia – that referee’s decision
The video taken this weekend of Slovenia vs USA shows a goal that was waved off at the last part of this important soccer match and has USA fans all around the world in a rage as no foul seemed to be committed on the play. This is the first time World Cup referee Koman Coulibaly
did not allow the goal but he gave no reason why which upset and was shocking to the fans.
After 85 minutes of action the game was in a tie. In the next minute, the captain of the USA team Landon Donovan struck with a right corner kick directed towards the centre of the goal area which was headed in by Maurice Edu for the go-ahead score that would then put the USA up 3-2. The goal was then not allowed by the referee, a foul was called, but no player in particular was singled out for the offense.
A lot of controversy broke out as the win by the USA would have put them in a tie for first place with Slovenia. The points help decide which team goes forward to the next round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.
There is a lot of public debate right now on the fact that in-experienced referees have no business working in the world’s most watched sporting event. As the World Cup goes on we are seeing more and more bizarre referee’s decisions, like the one with Australia versus Ghana
What do you think on this issue of referee’s with no previous world cup experience?
